Abstract
Toxoplasma is a common cause of infection in humans the world over. Toxoplasmosis, the disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is observed in only a small portion of those infected. Distinction between Toxoplasma , infection and the disease toxoplasmosis has important implications for both diagnosis and therapy.
From May to June 1984, a total of 130 patients hospitalized at Chosun University Hospital were examined by indirect latex agglutination test in order to evaluate the presence of the Toxoplasma antibody in Korea.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. The positive rate of Toxoplasma antibody was 11.5%(male : 13.3%, female : 8.5%) in these samples with latex antibodies of 1: 16 or higher being regarded as positive. Among the 130 samples of test sera 15 showed positive; 1: 16, in 4, 1 : 32 in 6, 1 : 64 in 2, 1 : 128 in 2 and 1 : 2,048 in 1 case.
2. The positive rate for the age groups was highest in the age group of 31 to 40 years with 22.7% and for the age groups of 41-50, 61-70 and 11-20 the positive rate was 18.2 %, 16. 7% and 15. 2% respectively.
3. Among the 15 positive cases, the Ig-G value was higher than normal in five cases, Ig -M value was higher than normal in four cases, but these cases did not come to toxoplasma antibody titers.
4. In Ig-G-absorbed sera of the 15 positive cases, Ig-M antibody activity was recognized in two cases and this is thought to be the early stage of Toxoplasma infection.
